What are some of the definitional issues of gangs that still plague law enforcement in the context of developing a national gang database? In respect to gang databases, what are Type I and Type II errors and how can they be dealt with? The definitional issues that are occurring are because every law enforcement agency defines gangs differently. For example California defines what a gang is differently than Chicago, Texas, etc. So when it comes to gathering data on a national scale, certain characteristics are not recorded state by state because their definition does not match other

For many, to fit in or be accepted in their “hood” could mean living a life of crime because that is the only way they know to survive. From the power point in class that was discussed, I conclude that lots of African Americans are in gangs. As stated in the article, the metro area of Houston has the most gang members that are active in the community. Gang members are involved in dog fighting, murders, human trafficking and many other illegal things that corrupt our
Discuss the differences between violent, criminal, and drug-oriented gangs. Some gangs are devoted to violence and to protecting neighborhood boundaries or turf; others are devoted to theft; some specialize in drug trafficking. 3. How do gangs in suburban areas differ from inner-city gangs? Suburban gangs tend to be composed of ethnic youths of European ancestry.
A Sociological Issue: The Big Gang Theory The concept of a gang can mean just a group of people that you like to spend time with. In America, though, the term gang has become much more than that. The term gang now speaks of something that puts fear in people because of the crime and other problems that they bring to our culture. There are a variety of large and small gangs in our country and for the most part they do not represent anything good. There is much more to a gang then just a group of delinquents as they are so often perceived.
There has been many a time in my life, as I’m sure there has been in everyone else’s, that being given the second chance has made the difference. But I do believe, however trite this may sound, that if you do an adult crime, you do adult time. Minors that commit certain serious crimes should be tried as adults. Some youths are even known to commit crimes without thought because they know they cannot be tried as adults. Violent, preventable crimes by minors have long plagued America’s larger cities but have scarcely been punished because of the age of the perpetrators.
The high likelihood of detection by the police, and the deterrent effects of punishment have been seen as forms of crime prevention. But the traditional criminal justice agencies have prevention as a sort of side effect or unintended consequence of their main aim of detection and punishment. And they are, as we have seen in previous lectures, not that efficient. Specific measures aimed at preventing crime have always been around in an everyday sense. Families, schools and communities disapprove of crime and this acts as a form of 'informal social control' People lock their doors and windows against burglars, and perhaps avoid badly lit areas, or certain parts of town, with the intention of reducing the likelihood of victimisation.
As anyone can imagine, gangs intimidate a lot of innocent people other than rival gang members. There are a number of interviews, on youtube.com and the show Gangland, where people are too scared to walk down certain streets because of their local gang problem. Even in Minnesota, this problem is relevant. If one has ever heard of Hennepin Avenue in Minneapolis then one would know about it and the problems that arise there. It’s not that the gangs are there, it’s the simple fact that they hurt how the city looks.
Prison Gangs Dealing with prison gangs is a task that is not easily rectified by prison staff. New and techniques to get messages from gang members inside prison to their counterparts outside prison walls is ever changing. Just when you think you have figured out how they are communicating to each other, gang members come up with new and alternate means to get the message out. This is not only true to gangs with members on the outside, but with gangs that are entirely made up of inmates as well. One possible way to deal with the growing problem of prison gangs and the violence that is often associated with them is to identify members and keep them separated (Demsky, 2009).
A video of the ruckus was posted to YouTube following the event, and cited numerous Birmingham gangs in its headline. Following reading the article, it is apparent that local gangs are utilizing the park as a venue to “handle business” or carry out grudges against rival gangs. The entire ideology surrounding gang culture is one of peer pressure. Juveniles are more often than not pressured into joining neighborhood gangs at an early age. In order to be considered a part of the gang, they must commit criminal acts that range from basic burglary to acts of violence.
