Friday Night Lights Based on H.G. Bissinger's book This movie profiles the economically depressed town of Odessa, Texas and their heroic high school football team, The Permian High Panthers. Directors: Peter Berg, Josh Pate Writers: Screen play written by David Aaron Cohen 3 main Actors: Billy Bob Thornton (Coach Gary Gaines), Jay Hernandez (Brian Chavez) and Derek Luke (Boobie Miles) Issues explored throughout this movie are people struggling with personal conflicts and financial hardship in the town until Friday night rolls around then everything is forgotten except football. The movie takes place in 1988. Plot Summary Friday night lights, is a movie about a small town and a football team. The town is called Odessa, there is not much to do in Odessa, so if you are a teenager living here it is a good chance you will follow in the footsteps of your father and his father before him and you will play football for the Odessa –Permian Panthers, and you will WIN!! When the movie takes place in 1988, the Permian Panthers have won state championship 4 years in a row and national Champions once. Now a new season has begun and Coach Gaines is expecting another title win. In my opinion the single most impressive aspect of this film was watching the relationship between Don and his dad. Don’s dad was a drunk who was not very nice to Don. He would embarrass him in front of his friends and teammates. When the game was over and they lost the championship, Don’s dad came up to him and gave him a hug and his championship ring. I was not expecting him to give him the ring and call him a champ; I thought he was going to yell at him again.
