FOUR COGNITIVE SKILLS FOR SUCCESSFUL LEARNING Jane Doe Your University Here Instructor 30 January 2011 “There is nothing that any human being knows, or can do, that he has not learned.” (du Plessis, 2002). From the time we are born, until the time we die, whether we know it or not, we are constantly learning. It is imperative that we exercise our brains in the same way we know we should exercise our bodies. While our minds require several learning skills to improve the way we learn, paramount among those learning skills are cognitive skills. “Cognitive skills are the mental capabilities you need to successfully learn academic subjects” (Gibson, 2007, p. 36). Without mastering the use of your cognitive skills, it would be difficult for you to master any new learning challenges you might undertake. Just like there are several learning skills we need to improve our learning, there are several cognitive skills that we need to successfully learn, among those there are four which should be considered the most important, concentration, perception, memory and logical thinking. We’ve all been there, it is 3:45 p.m. and you are sitting in class. You realize that there are only 15 minutes left and you are getting antsy. You’ve been here since 8 this morning and you are going stir crazy. The teacher is still droning on, but all you can do is look out the window and day dream about leaving. Finally, the tick tick tick of the clock signals it is the end of the day and you rush out of the classroom in sweet relief. This lack of attention is common when we’ve lost our concentration. It is basically sensory overload, and your brain tends to wonder instead of focus on what is being taught because your mind and body realize that you need to rest at that moment. “When a person focuses his attention for any length of time we refer to this as concentration” (du Plessis, 2002).
