An example of this would be when his sister Phoebe corrects him and tells him the poem was by Robert Burns. Holden comes back by saying “I know it’s a power by Robert Burns”. The author does this to show the change tone which Holden presents in the sentence. His change to a serious tone indicated his little regard to minute details; he only cared about the bigger picture. This also could be used to describe to describe his view on life seeing that he thought people were “boring” if they were just like everyone else and cared about the little details.
However, after being reacquainted, Gatsby exclaims, "She [Daisy] never loved you [Tom], do you hear"" he cried. "She only married you because I was poor and she was tired of waiting for me. It was a terrible mistake, but in her heart she never loved anyone except me!"'(137). Even though it appears that Daisy places importance on the values of love, she still chooses the status and comfort of Tom Buchanan’s wealth. In Tom and Daisy’s superficial relationship, the absence of love is evident by the lack of their communication.
When two people marry it should be because they love each other not because of money and the pressures from you family. F. Scott Fitzgerald describes the lives of Daisy and Tom Buchanan and also Daisy’s former lover, Jay Gatsby. In this novel ‘The Great Gatsby’ the conflict occurs when Daisy is about to marry Tom but finds out that Gatsby wants to resurrect their previous relationship. Family pressure, money and love are ideas presented in the passage through characterisation and symbolism and the reader is encouraged to disagree with Daisy’s actions. In many families there are conflicts or disagreements.
Tom Buchanan and George Wilson By: Charles Tostaine The Great Gatsby was full of metaphors and symbolism along with similar characters that put together the outstanding story. One character, Tom Buchanan, was an intense character by handling his marriage in an improper way. Another character, George Wilson, was similar to Tom but was completely oblivious to his marriage. Although Myrtle threw him around and ordered him to do many things, George loved Myrtle but also had no clue to what his wife was doing. The characters Tom Buchanan and George Wilson, both similar and different, are used by Fitzgerald to explain the nature of man.
She did not find that a marriage service generated love; she did not enable her husband to recapture his youth through hers; nor could she compensate for that by running his home in the manner of an experienced housekeeper.” This quote illustrates that Elias Strorm was very cruel to her that she died after her second child was born. She was a beautiful, young woman who Elias turned into a very dull person. She always wanted him to be happy and be a good person, but that did not happen, he was just unfair and unpleasant to everyone. To conclude Elias Strorm’s wife is a good supporter of her husband as well as Emily Strorm. The role of women does demonstrate bystanders and supporters of their husbands and family member.
Also Curley doesn’t treat his wife very well, in those days hardly any men treated there wives well. Women were of such lower class to men, men were allowed to still rule over them and tell them what to do, a bit like Curleys wife probably not having much choice into marrying Curley. I like the way john Steinbeck makes Curleys wife into such a judgemental character at the start, by making her sound so flirty and seductive.
I believe that when they first got married there was some kind of love in their relationship, but when they realized they could not conceive a child Don Elias blamed his wife. Even though it was most likely he was the infertile one, he treated her as if all she was good for was to take care of him like a maid. This is what made her a hard, bitter old woman. Dona Matilida believes it was her fault, and feels guilty about not being able to provide him with a child he so greatly desired. This caused her to turn a blind eye to what he was doing around town with other women.

If I’d went, I wouldn’t be livin like Hurley 2 this, you bet.” (Steinbeck 88) Daisy from the Great Gatsby dream was to be married to her husband because she lost the chance of becoming famous. Daisy was only married to her husband, because he was rich and he could provide for her. Both Daisy and Curley’s wife didn’t really truly love their husbands.
Infidelity today is the number one killer of marriages and relationships, and can be looked at as a symptom for non-working marriages. In the novel there was a lack of love and respect in the marriages, and there wasn’t anyone trying to fix their marriages either because they were around for their spouse’s money, or cheated because they were rich and felt could get away with it. There was one couple in particular that demonstrated these examples of infidelity in the novel. The couple was Daisy and Tom. Daisy stayed married to Tom because he was buying her happiness and his money, while deep down, she was really hurt and sad about the relationship.
