“My Favorite Energy Resource” My favorite energy resource is Hydroelectric Power because it’s very easy to run without polluting the environment. Hydroelectric power has been used for years, and it’s still the best form to produce electricity. The hydro-electric stations are expensive, but after it’s built the energy is totally free. The technique used for this energy resource is water plus gravity and moving turbines that are used to generate electricity. This means that energy is constantly generated. A simple formula for approximating electric power production at a hydroelectric plant is: P = ohrgk where P is Power in watts, p is the density of water (~1000 kg/m3), h is height in meters, r is flow rate in cubic meters per second, g is acceleration due to gravity of 9.8 m/s2, and k is a coefficient of efficiency ranging from 0 to 1. Most of the hydro-electricity we used here in California is from, the Hoover Dam. Disregarding the cost of this dam, we are here happy using the energy. However, there are disadvantages of each energy resource. One disadvantage for this type of energy resource is the flooding, because it may destroy the dam from the weight of the water. Second is that there are not places to build it. But as always there are solutions such as we can build artificial falls and we can maintain water levels. Water is renewable because of evaporation so we don’t have to worry much. Third is Dam failures, because people construct the structure with errors or bad calculations, the dam could possibly break. Fourth is terrorism, terrorists could target the hydroelectric station like the destruction of the Twin Towers. The major advantage of hydroelectricity is that it doesn’t use fossil fuels to create electricity. The cost of operating a hydroelectric plant is nearly immune to increases in the cost of fossil fuels such as oil, natural gas or coal, and no
