The Importance of Perspective “It is a narrow mind which cannot look at a subject from various points of view” and the view point you see the world from hinges on your behaviour (Eliot, 91). Fahrenheit 451 is based around the world of Guy Montag, a fireman whose job it is to burn books and the houses that contain them in order to assist the government in supressing dissenting ideas. The government believes that these dissenting ideas come from thinking and as a result they fill people’s lives with television and radio to avoid giving them down time for thought. Early on, Montag is fine with this oppression of free thought until he meets a young girl. This girl turns his understanding upside down and Montag winds up stealing a book from a burning, contacting an old English professor to assist him in his rebellion. Inevitably, it is discovered that Montag has this book and his own house is slated for burning, after which Montag must flee the city which is how he comes across many people who are fugitives like himself, all of whom are trying to preserve…show more content…
Fire is represented as destructive in conjunction with the times that Montag is willing to go along with social expectations. In contrast, fire is used to symbolise renewal and new beginnings during periods of uncertainty for Montag. Finally, fire offers warmth and strength at times when he is most in need of those entities. The most important effect of using the different connotations of this symbol is to emphasise the importance of grasping things from all sides and thinking about them, looking at all aspects, before forming your own opinion. However, with technology being an ever-increasing aspect of most people’s lives, it is very likely that individual thought could become obsolete if people do not take the time for such activities away from technologies such as
