The role of censorship in a dystopian society that Ray Bradbury created has a lot of familiar ideas and practices that we see in our democratic government today. In Fahrenheit 451 Ray Bradbury foreshadowed the future. He created a dystopian society to show what he thought would happen in the future of The United States. In both Ray Bradbury’s Fahrenheit 451’s society and in our present day United States, we see how the government’s involvement creates a level of control, which affects each society. The main theme of the novel Fahrenheit 451 is the control of the knowledge. Ray Bradbury created this dystopian society that created many ways to limit and stop the spread of knowledge through human interaction. ** One example of these censorship limitations is the burning of books. In this society the job of the firefighters is not to stop fires, but to start them and burn all the books they find. The firefighters burn books because the government does not allow people to read whatever they desire. The government fears that through reading the citizens will become too knowledgeable causing them to question their authority, which will lead to the government being over thrown. The actual books are not what the government is afraid of, but the information they provide. They fear that information will cause the people to think they have the power to disagree with the laws and regulations of their society. For example, the firefighters do not know the history of the past purpose of the firefighters. This lack of knowledge helps the government create a society where the citizens do not ask questions. Not only does the government censor books, they create rules that limit communication. For example, the speed limit in this society is very fast, most likely faster than our present day is allowed to drive. This is because the government does not want people to
