Behaviour Depending on social conditioning and other factors, delegates joining a programme of learning bring with them an established behaviour pattern. This becomes a challenge in some instances, as views and opinions on what is correct behaviour differs greatly between people. Therefore there is a need to control behaviour to create an environment, which is conducive to learning. Learning Environment The environment must be conducive to learning, which means that the learner must be comfortable with the physical environment as well as the behaviour of the other learners and the programme leader. One of the ways which learners can feel comfortable is when they know what behaviour is expected from them and what behaviour can be expected from the programme leader. Setting Ground Rules From The Beginning When ground rules are not established from the beginning of the programme of learning, the course leader runs the risk of not creating the right learning environment. Therefore it can result in fewer / lower academic achievements due to some course participants feeling uncomfortable with the poor behaviour of others. Examples of poor behaviour may include offending others, disruptive behaviour, bullying and harassment and showing no regard to equality legislation. Ground rules must be set right at the beginning of the course to reduce the likelihood of any of the problems above. Pre-Determined Ground Rules When training within an organisation for which the learners belong, some of the ground rules are already pre determined. Examples include equality and diversity policies and health and safety policies. This makes establishing ground rules much easier as the learner all ready has an understanding of what is required of them and the consequences of not adhering to them.
