An Evaluation of Facebook Mary Taylor English 111 September 17, 2009 An Evaluation of Facebook Facebook was created by Mark Zuckerberger in 2004. He was a sophomore at Harvard University and wanted to be able to keep in touch with his colleagues and get to know them better over the Internet. It was an instant success, and became so popular that other colleges soon adopted it as well. Within one year it was made available to the public. The only qualification was that you had to be at least 13 years old. (Roeder, 2009) Facebook has many options regarding the way it can be used. You can share as much or as little of yourself as you would like. It gives you the opportunity to make new online friends with common interests, as well as reconnect or keep up with old friends. You are able to post photos and videos, and share information about yourself. Facebook also facilitates groups that you may create or join. These can take many forms, and can bring together online communities of people with any imaginable common interest. Because of its versatility and convenience, Facebook has become a craze for young people. It is the most popular social networking site on the web, and has become extremely popular with high school and college students. However, in recent years an older demographic has become increasingly involved with Facebook as they realize the benefits of connecting with friends, networking for employment and special interests, and promoting organizations and causes. (Patrick Taylor, 2009) There are pros and cons to keep in mind with Facebook. One area of concern is the negative effect on employee productivity. Research shows that out of 237 randomly selected office workers, two-thirds of those who have Facebook accounts visit the site during working hours for an average of 15 minutes every day. 87% of people who use Facebook at work could not
