1 Ethical Dilemma Within a Police Officer Police officers have many ethical decisions to make everyday. Decisions as small as accepting free Tim Hortons coffee to taking the life of one person to save thousands of people. Everyday is filled with decisions for a police officer. To put things into perspective, a police officer who has been brought up with Christian values and holds the Bible in high regard. They are married and have kids. The officer and spouse attend Right to Life parades and demonstrations. The police officer also holds a combination of ethical values from themselves and through which they have learned from police foundations, the police academy. After serving a couple years on the job they have been asked to go and protect an abortion clinic on Harbord Street. Knowing that they themselves believe that abortion is wrong but that they also have a job and duty to do when going into this field of work. All of a sudden the police officer is know finding themselves stuck in a dilemma by protecting the abortion clinic; the police officer realizes it's against their Christian values. There are many different avenues the police officer could take. They could opt to dismiss their ethical beliefs and continue to protect the abortion clinic or they could exercise their ethical beliefs and refuse to protect what their commanding officer told them to. If the police officer chooses to continue to protect the abortion clinic, then they will be going against all moral and ethical judgement they previously went by. The officer will also oppose their support for anti-abortion clinics and may be seen as a “hypocrite” to others who believe in Pro-Life. On a positive note, however, they would not have to worry about getting fired and may eventually reach a promotion for their dedication and hard work.
