Task 2: describe how discrimination can be seen in practise. Prejudice is the prejudging of people or groups of people; this is not based on any evidence or factual knowledge but on ignorance and fear. Discrimination involves a person or persons acting on their prejudices which results in the unfair treatment of an individual or groups of individuals. Discrimination mainly happens on the bases of a person’s sexuality, ethnicity, religion, age, culture, gender, social class, health status and cognitive ability. There are four types of discrimination, the first is individual discrimination.
Many writers argues that stereotypes causes many trouble to people's lives in kinds of aspects and bring them a lot of troubles. Cofer points out that media use the image of Latina women lead people to misunderstanding them. She describes the terrible experiences that the boss of Puerto Rican women proposed the unfair condition to decide their future of jobs in the factories and men would often misinterpret their tight skirts and jingling bracelets as a lure. In the same way, Gup provides the example that people believe the stereotypes and these stereotypes also place a crushing burden on Asian-Americans. Gup argues the stereotype makes people feel uncomfortable because that his teacher think he could and should do better just because he is a Jew.
Discrimination The existence of discrimination has and always will be a prevalent topic in our society. The protagonists in the stories “The Handicapped” by Randolph Bourne, “The Ethics of Living Jim Crow” by Richard Wright and “How It Feels to Be Colored Me” by Zora Neale Hurston are all victims of some form of discrimination. There are many reasons that an individual might experience bias. Discrimination can be based on one’s race, religious affiliation, appearance or sexual orientation. In the essays “Ethics of Living Jim Crow” and “How It Feels to Be Colored Me” both of the main characters are discriminated against because of their race.
The United States does have a strong history of hostility towards specific immigrant groups such as the Nativists who opposed Irish immigration around 1850 and systematic bias against Japanese and German immigrants just before and after the second world war. Jews were also popular targets in the 20th centuary. These days most hostility is geared towards the Latin American immigrants as they are seen to be the largest group of immigrants entering the United States today. Some Americans have not completely adjusted to the largely non-European immigration and racism does occur. Hostility towards people of middle-eastern descent has also become apparent after the September 11th attacks conducted by an Islamic extremist group known as Al Qaeda.
In the work place discrimination can play a huge role in a person's race or skin color unfairly becoming a factor when deciding who receives a job, promotion, or other employment benefits. It has been said that whites have received favorable treatment, being ahead of other races and ethnicities when it comes to job offers and or promotions. Racial discrimination in the work place can also seem as if you are being harassed by co-workers and or your boss. Our own presidents as well as other politicians of the United States are extensively discriminated against. Because Of the variety of races and ethnicities they has been a targeted by various predominantly white organizations.

Discrimination- unlawful discrimination occurs when a person is harassed or treated arbitrarily or different because of their membership in a “protected class”.
What is your race? Have you ever been suspected of committing such a wrong doing, thinking, just because of your race? Don’t we hate it when others judge us based on our looks? It is offensive for us because they have made assumptions based on our physical appearance and those assumptions could, or most likely, be wrong. Physical appearance is not enough justification or evidence for others to think of who we may be.
However, the reality is that the result of some hate crimes does affect the victims in a monetary way. Of the 7,164 reported hate crimes 41.8 percent were against property (fbi.gov, 2013). Acts carried out were cross burnings, defacement of property, and destruction of property that have cost the victims a great deal of money to repair. There are cases when the damage or intimidation has caused the victims to relocate or purchase fire arms to protect themselves (Barnes & Ephross, 1994), which is another expense directly contributed to the crime. Not only does the person(s) under attack financially suffer, but the city and community loose too.
Unfortunately, due to the many Islamic terrorist organizations in the world and their many threats or attacks on the different populations, many people have discriminated against persons who are, or who are believed to be, Arab or Muslim, regardless of what those persons actually believe or practice. In fact, in response to the attacks of September 11, 2001, the United States has taken many actions. The government has made it more difficult for Arabs or Muslims to immigrate to the United States or to apply for citizenship or permanent residence classification. It has also undertaken wiretapping and other searches which once required warrants and used the information it obtained through them to prosecute Arabs or to accuse them of terrorist actions. Lastly, it has continued to hold Arabs in Guantanamo Bay in Cuba, even after federal courts have specified those prisoners have certain rights that cannot be denied them.
