How is discrimination different from prejudice and stereotyping? Discrimination is the denial of opportunities and equal rights to individuals and groups because of prejudice and other arbitrary reasons (Schaefer, 2012). While prejudice and stereotyping are the often cause or basis of discrimination, what makes them different is the main characteristic of discrimination, that is, the denial or deprivation that is experienced by the group that is being discriminated against. Prejudice and stereotyping are predetermined thoughts or beliefs of groups without actual interaction or knowledge of the groups. • What are the causes of discrimination? The most common causes of discrimination are: sexual orientation, race, disability, religious beliefs, age, gender, and ethnicity. The competition for jobs, opportunity, and economic standing can also lead a dominate group do developing discriminatory policies and beliefs. Women often find themselves passed over in the work place. Minorities are often targeted by law enforcement and people of authority. Since the bombing of the World Trade Centers September the 11th 2001, many Muslim people have been single out as terrorist and often find themselves ill-treated in public setting. • How is discrimination faced by one identity group (race, ethnicity, religious beliefs, gender, sexual orientation, age, or disability) the same as discrimination faced by another?
