Welfare assistance has been around for what seems like forever. It is a great resource for those struggling to get by and keep a roof over their families head and food on the table. Unfortunately there are too many people out there that abuse the system, making it harder for those that actually need the assistance to receive it. Welfare applicants should be required to submit to a drug test in order to receive benefits. By requiring this many people will stop applying to avoid taking a drug test and the resources will be available to those who need it. Welfare benefits can include cash assistance, SNAP (food stamps), health insurance, rent assistance, and help paying utility bills. The income guidelines are very strict for assistance and vary depending on which programs you are applying for and the size of your household. The basic eligibility rules for welfare are your income, after specified deductions, is below 100% of the Federal Poverty Guidelines ( “Should the House..”, 2013). Most people stay in these guidelines and requirements by working the bare minimum at minimum wage. Others do not keep a job for long, usually due to drug use, and jump back and forth between employment and welfare (McCollum, 2012). They do this in order to extend the time, or drag out the time they are eligible for assistance. Another loophole is that people who are attending school are exempt from the employment requirements (Danziger et al., 2002). This is leading to recipients to continuously enroll in classes in order to avoid employment and continue receiving assistance. Getting an education is necessary to gain better employment but these abusing the system are also abusing the education system, and it is leading to recipients falling further and further into debt (Danziger et al., 2002).
