The rough Winter most likely was the cause to 70 deaths. Based on the “Background Essay”, “Then, in the awful winter of 1609-1610, another two-thirds of the settlers died.” Harsh winters were bound to happen. There was nothing anybody could do about it or prevent it. The colonists could have prepared for it, but because they did not have the current technology, they could have not possibly predicted that a rough winter was coming their way. According to “Document D”, in 1607 August through October “Summer sickness kills half the colonists” The summer of 1607 was so severe that it killed 50 people.
These stories don’t really go into the aftermath of the families and such, but you can imagine how terrible it was for them to hear it. Realize that just one person being killed has a huge impact on many people. Imagine how many people die every single day of these things. So have a
"It's all in a day's work..." is a frequent response. However, clinical depression is common especially for people who play a role in high profile rescue efforts. A few examples include Robert O’Donnel of the Midland Fire Rescue, Texas who pulled 18 month old Jessica out of a deep well. O'Donnel never recovered from that incident. He became an alcoholic, lost his job, his family and in 1995, about seven years later, he committed suicide with a shotgun (Lunsford, 2002, Babinek, 1997).
Dale did not know the suspects, nor could he defend himself. Several citizens were exposed to an extreme act of violence and were put at great risk. This tragedy could have been much worse if innocent bystanders were hit by stray bullets.” (Jana 2012) In this quote even professionals state that it was a random act. Citizens of the Edmonton area have great warrant for concern that a murder would take place over a small
Many gloomy days have hit us this school year. Most of these events are disturbing. They make you worry about your faith in humanity. The killing spree in Aurora, Colorado during the Batman premiere is a fair example. The Aurora shooting was a gruesome crime that murdered twelve people and injured fifty-eight more.
I wish I could understand so I could help prevent them from doing so. I also felt disturbed when Charlton Heston held a pro-gun rally after the Columbine shooting. He also showed up after the first grader was shot. Charlton Heston refused to say sorry for hosting the rallies after the horrifying events. It just shows how ignorant people are in the United States.
Some of those reasons being the crime rates, the costs of what could happen, and injuries. Firearm injuries have killed more than 28,000 Americans each year since 1972 (Ruben). In 2007, thirty-one thousand two hundred twenty four Americans died due to homicides, suicides, and accidental shootings. Accidental shootings happen quite often. In 2007, around seventy thousand Americans were hospitalized due to accidental shootings.
I have lost family and close friends to senseless gun violence. I have been shot twice for being at the wrong place at the wrong time. On another occasion I was coming home one evening from work and along the way I was approached by someone who pulled a gun at me to rob me and if it wasn't for my military training and the fact that the guy didn't know that the safety was on i wouldn't have made it, so I was permitted to walk away with my life. Apart from my friends who have been killed by firearms I know yet more friends, family and acquaintances that have been paralyzed, maimed, or wounded by gunfire. At times I feel as if I am incarcerated, even though I am a free citizen.
They even thought that I was high and gone off of a top notch drug. Some even asked if I could supply them with some of the “products”. In a speech Dr. King quoted, “The ultimate tragedy is not the oppression and cruelty by the bad people but the silence over that by the good people.” The biggest problem I had out of my friends that Thursday though, was not saying anything to one of them about bullying and talking down on this guy that we did not even know. I felt like I was the one bullying him because I did not say or do anything about it. I just
To go on, these same eye witnesses were never questioned by authorities until 48 hours after the incident occurred. This is a perfect example of how the Oxford police were indifferent to the crime and had no interest in pursuing justice. It is one thing to realize that so many townspeople would care so little, but it is the police’s job to care and effectively ‘protect and serve’. The racial killing of Marrow was not only grossly unnecessary but also morally lacking. It is hard to believe that even in the 1970’s so many people in my own town could so readily display such a disgusting side of human nature.
