Dear Journal, Slavery is a horrible event that occurs to people that has skin like me. I know because I lived through the moments of sadness, the moments of pain, the moments of confusion. I Abena Bah used to be a slave. Every day I thank the almighty God, I escaped. I was free at last hoping that I could forget my past. I was hoping that I could forget the things I saw. To this day I remember so many disturbing images. I know they will be in my memory till the day I die. I remember everything that was done and said to me during those years as a slave. I remember the first journal I ever wrote. I was only 12 years old. May 19, 1782 (My first journal), Last week mama gave me a present for my birthday. I got this book I’m writing in it. She made it herself by attaching pieces of paper with animal skin. A few days ago, Auntie told us true stories about a man named Christopher Columbus. He lived a long time ago. She told us that he met the Native Americans (who had darker skin and different appearances). Mr. Columbus then enslaved them. He made them harvest cotton and sugar. He also forced them to find valuables. I was disgusted when Auntie told us that if the Nave Americans disobeyed, they would get their limbs cut off. Mr. Columbus wanted to start an international slave trade, but failed. Then, the Native Americans started dying. They died because the Europeans spread diseases like measles, mumps, and typhus. They spread so many diseases due to how they lived. Auntie said that they had a lot of livestock, poor hygiene, and the type of climate they had could have been a cause of their…show more content…
