In the excerpt from People’s History of the United States, the author pinpoints a lot about the hostility and innocence of Indians and how the European Discovery ended up sabotaging their lives and forcing slavery upon on them. Columbus is aware of the actions he takes after part-taking in the welcoming of the foreigners, he sees potential to profit from the land. While persuading the
The French’s trip to Cape Fear in 1524 is what led to the report back to France about the New World. The French were only looking for a means of extra income. The Indians and the French mixed well together as they both solely wanted to trade. The Indians benefited from the French products such as Iron. The French possessed a high interest in the furs that the Indians had made.
In conclusion I believe that the Europeans brought scalping to the natives when they came to colonize. Scalping is a very harsh act that took place up until the 19th century with the last people to do it being the Natives. Although the Europeans introduced scalping, the Natives continued the tradition. Both sides are equally as guilty of this harsh
Research Paper 4 Question: How did imperialism help and eventually hurt powers in Europe? Imperialism helped European powers by giving confidence to the European government. It hurt them by bringing conflict with the British and china causing the Opium war, also a major part of European imperialism was the colonization of Africa and India... The Europeans made a big name for themselves during the late 1800s, early 1900s, they ran through countries like Africa for the fact that they could. They caused a lot of hatred towards them that evolved into more… Along with expanses, there came abusive power from the European countries.
Hunter Harper Paper 1 Indians and disease Collin G. Calloway says it is true that disease was a key factor in the depopulation of native Americans in America. Calloway reveals that the European invasion was a great factor of epidemics. The disease they fought were smallpox, diphtheria, measles, bubonic, and pneumonic plaque, cholera, influenza, typhus, dysentery, and yellow fever. The native Americans had a tough time fighting theses diseases due to lack of knowledge of cures. These cures were mostly attempted by plant or herb remedies and often failed to provide protection for the Indian population.
Although the explorations brough slavery and death, the age of explorations had a postive effect overall because the start of new culture, animals, food, education and technology that had spread all over the new world and Europe. The age of explorations still had some negative effects like disease, slavery and loss of culture over the new world and Europe. Trade and explorations not only became responsible for social and economic advantages but also the spread of disease. “Small pox was the only one of the diseases the marinheiros let loose on the native poples over seas- perhaps the most destructives certainly the most spectacular- but the only one” (Crosby, 208) Disease mostly had a huge impact on the population in north and south America.
Shamans, conjurers, medicine men, or anyone who had claimed special power lost respect and authority because their traditional therapies were not effective in curing the infectious diseases. The disaster also distorted their spirituality. Some tribes believed that only extensive hunting of animals could stop the diseases (Kraut 19). It led to the development of the fur trade that brought more attention of Europeans to the New World. Fertile lands of the New World abundantly multiplied many Europeans fauna and flora.
HistorySlavery was an institution that victimized as well as other cultures due to being in a controlled environment. Every suffered in their own way due to racial prejudice and fear of growing numbers. Masters which were also called Slave "owners" believed that treating another human being of another color like an animal was right. The children of the slave owners were being victimized as well due to following what their parent’s doings were right in treating another human being in such a manner. Slavery was so victimized that it still affects the society to the extent that black people blame the whites , and white people still agree that black people need to be slaves.
Finally, Native Americans did not have a lot of major diseases before Europeans arrived and did not develop the immunity to a lot of the diseases they had in Europe. After Europeans arrived, all of the things changed for the Native Americans. One good thing that came for them was they could trade for new or better goods. Europeans brought things that the Native Americans had never seen before like armor, horses, and foods and could now try and trade for this. Europeans however also brought advanced weapons like guns and they traded for a few but mostly the guns conquered the Native Americans.
The colonialists would use their superior power to force the local inhabitants into a labour force, some may call this exploitation and in many cases it was but along with all this exploitation and violence was a new found infrastructure government system. There were many positives that followed colonialism as I mentioned above but in order for the colonialists to establish this new way of life amongst the local people much blood followed and new diseases to which the local people had no immunity. Recently there has been this outcry by the “oppressed” countries that the western countries should pay reparations for slavery and colonialism to minorities and natives of the third world. Personally I think this is a ridiculous point to try and make. There is nothing uniquely western about colonialism.
