Music Censorship in America In a country specifically known worldwide for its opportunity and embrace of freedom, it is ironic that the degree of censorship is as prevalent as it remains to be. This is especially true concerning musical expression, and specifically the genres of rock and roll and rap music. The United States Government is supposed to be the voice of its citizens, but concerning censorship and specifically the censorship of popular music, there can be a discord between the government and the people it represents and serves. First Amendment rights and responsibilities One of the principles of our constitution on which America was founded was that every individual has unalienable rights, and one of the most important rights is our freedom of speech. People can become more educated and experience personal growth through the exposure of how others feel and think as expressed in their music. These expressed musical experiences can allow others to know in some measure what it is like to be the depressed person, or to be shunned as an outcast socially. Other music may educate the sexes on their counterparts, thus enhancing interpersonal relationships. Music helps some people in times of trouble, especially adolescent children dealing with fitting in with the peers during the awkward stages of puberty. Many songs have lifted the spirits of those downtrodden and in despair. One would think that lyrics being sung about love lost, pain, and suffering, anger, angst and confusion would not be what a resident psychologist would prescribe but for some it provides and emotional and spiritual connection that may have a therapeutic benefit upon the individual
