How Are Drugs Portrayed In Music? I) Introduction Many people think that music is nothing but an entertainment to help people relax and kill stress but that is not all music can function in our society today. Music is not only an entertainment but it is also used as a tool for communication. According to some hip-hoppers and rappers and other artists, their music is connected to philosophy, religion and other things that exist in our society. It is a commentary. Music helps people feel better about the situations that are happening on them. For example, after the incident of Virginia Tech, a song called “Rise Up” performed by Kelly R., was introduced to music listeners. The song encouraged the families of the victims to feel better. Kelly R. wanted to share the sorrows with the victims and their families. There are also some artists that try to influence people to do bad things such as using drugs, commit a crime. They write songs that defend themselves from the critics. In this article, we are not going to discuss about how music influences people to do commit a crime or to do a charity but instead we will be focusing on how things are portrayed in music. As a listener of music I want to understand more about what I am listening to and why I am listening to it. I want to know the aspects of artists toward drugs.
