What effects did the new immigrants have on American society? The new immigrants had its benefits and ill effects on American society. One of the more positive advantages that they brought was ethnic enclaves. Ethnic enclaves, often called “ghettos,” were created by Irish and German immigrants to maintain cultural tradition and institutions. They provided familiar, if foreign to outsiders, pastimes and religious services centering around: 1. Taverns 2. Theaters 3. The penny press All of which were designed respectively for lower class citizens. It soon became clear that the benefits of the market revolution were not distributed equally. Cities in the early nineteenth century lacked clean water supplies, sewers, and garbage collection.
