Effective Communication and Organizational Models HCS/325 January 21, 2013 Effective Communication and Organizational Models Vertical Functional Structure Effective communication in organization increases employee efficiency, helps to decrease employee turnover, and improves an organization’s atmosphere. Preparation in every situation paves the wave for effective communication along with deciding on a successful organizational structure. Organizations of all sizes uphold some type of organizational structure that play a key role in the effectiveness of the interaction distributed throughout the company. An organizational method most familiar with for an automotive industry is the vertical functional structure. The vertical structure for this automotive group was the corporate office. “The line of authority that vertically linked all positions with the top being the highest” (Lombardi & Schermerhorn, 2007, p. 65). The functional structure for this automotive group was the dealerships. "In functional structures people with similar skills and performing similar tasks are grouped together" (Lombardi & Schermerhorn, 2007, p. 56). The dealerships grouped departments together that had the same skill set so that each functional area operates consistently and efficiently. Each dealership had a sales department, parts department, service department, business development center, and business office. According to Lombardi and Schermerhorn, “if each function does its job well, the expectation is that the business will operate successfully” (Lombardi & Schermerhorn, 2007, p. 56). The dealerships thrived because of this organizational model.
