Does Fashion Matter? 7/16/2015 When people first started putting on clothing, fashion was created. From different cultures, religions, places, nationalities, “fashion” was a big role, whether we thought of it or not. Mostly in the youth of this generation, when we think of fashion we usually imagine some ditsy girls or supermodels that waltz around in expensive clothes with fancy well known labels. Or you may think of the brands names that are fairly popular like Prada, Chanel, Jordans, Forever 21, and other stuff. But it’s much more than that. Fashion can mark all the way back before Ancient Egypt; But, let’s stop there. Back to 3100 B.C. Ancient Egypt was a thriving civilization with a proud passion for fashion. In all the textbooks we see these decked out fancy side profile drawn hieroglyphics looking elegant in their headdresses and jewelry. Or, we see slaves and commoners dressed in a plain white article of clothing carrying a huge slab of rock to make pyramid in the heat of the desert. But, they were okay because of the material of the fabric. The Ancient Egyptians wore light made from linen. Linen is a very light fabric made from flax, which was grown by the Nile. All men wore a wrap-around skirt that was tied at the waist with a belt. The length of the skirt varied depending on the fashion of the time. For example, more towards the New Kingdom Period they were short, while in the Middle Kingdom they were calve length. There was also a time were pleated skirts were very popular. Of course, getting into pleated, draped, and plain fabric is a whole different essay. Rich Egyptian men were able to afford the best quality linen which was so fine, it was almost see-through. Rich Egyptian men also wore as much jewelry as they could afford and decorated their clothes to their style. They expressed their creativity though decorating their clothes.
