Doing the Right Thing If someone was being ridiculed or picked on would you stand up for that person or just turn your back and ignore it. Courage will cause one to defend another person in any circumstance. Sometimes it is hard to stand up for what is right especially when you are standing alone. In the short story “A &P” the author describes the setting and characters in great detail, and writes about something everyone can relate to. While working on the register, Sammy encountered a scenario in which his courage was revealed. When three young ladies were being embarrassed about how they were dressed in the store Sammy was forced to choose either to let this happen or to stand up against his boss. Everyday many kids get physically and emotionally hurt. Some of the students step in while others look away. The first year of high school is one of the hardest years of a young boy’s life. I watched a freshmen boy being bullied throughout the year, whether he was being made fun of because of his size or being pushed around by the older stronger boys. Every time after having his books knocked out of his hands or being pushed against the lockers one could see the hurt he was going through. At first it was just hurtful words, but hurtful words turned into hurtful actions. It was to the point the boy was being picked on so much he would show up late for class and stay after class to avoid being harassed. One day the teacher was out sick and a substitute teacher was instructing the class. The boy came to class late but was unable to stay after class. As soon as the bell rang he scrambled to get away from the bullies but there was no hope. The bully caught him right as he had left the teachers sight. I stood there watching as the bully pushed him around continuously, but I could watch no more. The bully had made a fist and was coming up behind the poor boy with is arm cocked. I tackled the bully right before he got the underclassman. The bully then was going to hit me but he was neither as strong nor fast as me and after hitting him in the ribs and putting him into a choke hold he realized he had been
