Is College Worth it? Everyone in the United States wants to achieve the “American Dream”. People want to be able to provide a stable life for their families. A college education has been a must to grow in the work industry. But during this economic recession, college students have been having a difficult time staying in the college path, especially working class students.
Chantel Mack Dr. Etheridge English 310 7 February 2011 Annotated Bibliography: Americo Paredes Americo Paredes was a Mexican American folklorist, teacher, writer, poet, and musician. He was a seminal Mexican scholar of the 20th century who developed the foundations of modern Mexican American scholarship. He was born on September 3, 1915 in Brownsville, Texas. Paredes studied corridos, folkloric ballads, machismo, and border stereotypes of Mexicans. Known as an ethnic activist he fought against discrimination towards Mexicanos and he wrote many stories dealing with the Mexican culture.
Opposing Perspectives on Mexican Culture Carlos Fuentes and Octavio Paz are two extremely influential writers in Latin American history. The authors wrote multiple books on similar topics that include Mexican culture and Mexican identity. Two of their most famous works include: The Labyrinth of Solitude by Octavio Paz and The Buried Mirror: Reflections on Spain and the New World by Carlos Fuentes. Although these books were written forty-two years apart, they discuss these aspects of Mexican culture and Mexican identity. The Labyrinth of Solitude discusses how when Mexican people travel through a figurative labyrinth to find themselves, they discover that there is a feeling of solitude.
Yet, I noticed there are certain characteristics my family does is considered Mexican even if most of the latter generations have lost touch of our roots. In my opinion I think I like all year around in school. If kids really look at it, we get alota days out for a break. Many schools also need to come on there education because the drop out rate may come back up if it already haven’t. Many schools say they do many things to help students and they really care about the students, blah blah blah, some schools are just all talk. College right after highs school is not for everyone. I do believe that all people can benefit from a college degree when the time is right for them. Returning to college later in life can be the result of real life career experience and the realization of what it really takes to get ahead in life. Motivation, learning style, and career goals can have a great impact on your success or failure as an adult student. I tried college right after high school but dropped out because I felt like I was wasting time and money.
One reason why it is so hard to change is that it doesn’t have to do with our surroundings, but it has to do with setting our mind to change. Once we do something for a long time it becomes embedded in us and it is really hard to undo what we have been doing our whole life. Another reason why it is hard to change is that people like the way things are and we are stubborn. We don’t like to try new things if our old things work just fine. Plus, change also comes with new information and we usually don’t want to go back and relearn new things.
