Arab culture often embraces Islam and they make use of the Arabic language. Arabs have various views regarding terrorism as a way to express their sovereignty. Arab Americans have contributed in the fields of labor, health, social justice, law, cultural awareness and community development by putting their own interest aside and working for the betterment of all. The terrorist attacks of September 11th not only brought Arabs to public attention, but also put them at risk and in danger of discrimination and prejudice. Still to this day discrimination is present throughout the U.S. many Arabs dress differently than do other Americans; their cuisine is drastically different and their traditions are different.
There have been laws put into place to prevent racial profiling based on an individuals religion or religious appearance in four states, Alaska, California, Massachusetts and Arkansas. (Racial Profiling, 2009) Orientalism is a demeaning point of view a person, often from the western hemisphere, has towards individuals from Asian or Arabic Middle Eastern decent. A couple examples of characteristics are mysteriousness and religious extremism. The number of hates crimes towards Muslims and Arabs have risen since the 9/11 attacks. People are often judged and immediately associated with terrorist groups simply by looking a certain way.
The devastating tragedy of 9/11 left all of America mourning. The horrific event opened the eyes of Americans, the fact that America was not invincible shocked many. The realization that the country was not undefeatable led to drastic changes. Post 9/11 security was increased, racial profiling became common, and foreigners were misjudged. The threat of terrorist attacks changed American culture immensely; the devastation wakened the need for protection and a sense of security.
Islam is important to study in a cultural diversity class since a common religion influences a culture; therefore it affects how they practice their religion. Muslims from different parts of the world will have varying philosophies despite sharing the same principle. In this paper I will compare Islam, Judaism and Christianity; I hope to clarify some points and discuss how Muslims are perceived in the United States, how Muslims are perceived in China and explain the perceptions and
I believe that racism does operate like a web. An article to support this idea would be Michael O. Emerson’s “Race, Religion, and Color Line (Or Is That the Color Wall?)”. Emerson quoted, “Religion contributes to racial division and inequality, then, in that it increases racial categorization, which is a by-product of congregational segregation” (207). By growing up in a certain area, the majority of American citizens tend to carry out connections with the people they see and share the same beliefs with. It’s going to be hard to overcome this racial segregation if you have grown up with it, but it is something that can be
Sunni caliphs worried that the Shia Imams would use this massacre to capture public imagination and topple monarchs. This fear resulted in the further persecution and marginalization of Shias. As a result of segregation between the two groups of Muslims, they have framed the current crises in Syria and Iraq. Where once the conflict between Sunni and Shiite
The world’s Muslims differ substantially not only in their religious views but also in their political and social orientation, including their conceptions of government, law, and human rights; their social agenda (in particular, women’s rights and the content of education); and their propensity for violence. The defining characteristics of the main tendencies in Islam are summarized in a typology that we apply on a region-by-region basis. This methodology allows for a more precise classification of groups and for comparisons across regions and allows us to identify in a systematic way the sectors with which the United States and its allies can find common ground to promote democracy and stability and counter the influence of extremist and violent groups. Having begun to lay the foundations for what could be called a “religio-political map,” we explore the main cleavages in the Muslim world, primarily those between the Sunni and Shi’a branches of Islam and between the Arab and the non-Arab Muslim worlds and those deriving from membership in subnational communities, tribes, and clans.
But, just because a few Muslim extremists committed a heinous crime the name Muslim has been forever tainted. Polls have shown that 93% of Muslims don’t support extremist views on terrorism and a rising number of Muslims have been actively speaking out against terrorism – something our media fails to mention. The thing is, we didn't really give Muslims a second thought until a select few deeply affected us. Now the reputation of all Muslims is forever negative because a few ill-minded people happened to be born
There are even laws and organizations that outlaw Arab. One policy in called the Lieberman Plan. This document was planed to redraw Israel's borders so that Israeli Arabs would be outside them, and under the jurisdiction of a future Palestinian State. Some Israeli politicians and leaders have used negative language when discussing Arabs; they were labeled as worms, murders, and terrorist. It hurts to hear and see such hate crimes go in
During this time of mass immigration millions of people came to America for a better life. These immigrants had been persecuted in their homes and wanted a new start where they wouldn’t be persecuted anymore. Immigrants heard about these amazing things going on in America and decided to make the long grueling journey overseas to start anew. When the immigrants finally arrived in America some of them realized that those stories might have been exaggerated a little bit, because life in America during that time wasn’t a easy one but it wasn’t a bad one
