How Far can we sympathise With the Policeman in Norman MacCaig’s Brooklyn Cop In the poem ‘Brooklyn cop’ MacCaig portrays the cop as loyal to Brooklyn, even though Brooklyn is a dangerous place. He could easily get injured or killed every day and is in constant peril. “Whose home is a place that he might, this time, never come back to?” This is a question as it is uncertain if he will be killed or not and is never sure he will come home. “This time” shows that this is a daily danger. This makes us gain respect and sympathy for the cop as it shows he puts his life on the line to protect others and cares about the people of Brooklyn more than his own life.
The title of the poem establishes the setting and tells us a little bit of what the poem is about. It is strange as there is not “a” or “the” used for the title: “Brooklyn Cop” The title doesn’t single anyone out, suggesting that it is aimed at all cops as “a” or “the” is not used. Brooklyn has a reputation for crimes, poverty and high unemployment and therefore is a bad area and implies that the cop is at risk of being injured. The poet uses word choice for this. “Cop” is slang for policeman, which suggests that he doesn’t follow the rules and also that his vocabulary isn’t of very high standard.
An outline of the inequalities of London road in Kings Lynn in comparison with City road, Cardiff The following essay explores the similarities and differences between the knowledge studied on City road, Cardiff (Making Social lives, 2009, DVD 1 and Learning Companion 1, 2009) and London Road, Kings Lynn, a familiar street to me in my home town. City road and London road are both historically classed as one of the busiest main through roads in its area. Both roads are flowing with traffic, pedestrians, old and new shops, houses, flats and takeaways. Migrants occupy many of the shops and buildings. Although City road being on a vaster scale the overview will point out the differences and similarities between the two, specifically focusing and outlining the inequalities.
City Road is one of the busiest streets in Cardiff and is an excellent example of the wide variety of life in a city today. Despite City Road being a multi-cultural society, there are many inequalities which exist. The term ‘inequality’ refers to “the unequal distribution of valued social resources within a society or between societies.” (Blakeley et al., 2012, p. 26). Throughout this essay I will explore factors such as the structure of City Road, parking and traffic congestion, local businesses and people’s perceptions and their role in becoming inequalities. The way City Road is structured does not reflect its society to a maximum.
City Road is the busiest road in Cardiff. Many motorists use City Road as a commute to get to work, home etc. Where as many other people take advantage of the many different shops and restaurants on City Road. In this assignment, I will be looking at the street furniture and road signage of City Road and how it favours the activities of some groups of people over others. City Road, like many others is widely used by pedestrians, workers, road users and the way in which City Road is organised, is largely controlled by the street furniture and signage used.
However, this is not always the case as cyclists seem to have their own rules. Although there are street signs indicating that cycling is not permitted during the shop opening hours, a proportion of them disregard this rule, making this one situation where the pedestrians no longer feel safe and secure. On City Road the cyclists use the road alongside other vehicles and appear to follow the rules, therefore, it would suggest that pedestrians in Cardiff feel safer. The pedestrians on City Road, also has the advantage of having islands to help cross the road safer with also different coloured tarmac, which defines the use for both drivers and walkers Lowestoft’s main street being pedestrianised is ideal for able and non able bodies equally. It is all evenly levelled and where the road meets the street, the pavement has a ridged texture to help make travel easier for the visually impaired.
Since urban people are motorized, parking issues are a part of the major conflict for urban planning. On street parking is the easiest way to stop by travelers’ destinations, and it has been considered as the main parking position before the parking structure appeared in the city. On street parking has been frequently used by travelers in cities, central business districts, shopping malls, and residential areas. However, on street parking has contributed a stable connection between drivers and public land uses. Those divers could not recognize harmful and unpleasant effects through on street parking circumstances.
This has increased the rate of auto accidents, socially and emotionally distracted us from friends and family, cell phone users have put their own safety at risk while using their phone just walking down the street, and have caused distractions in the class room as well. People who text while driving are not only putting their own lives in danger, but also passengers in their vehicle and others on the road around them. There are so many fatalities on the roads today due to cell phone users. Just looking down at your phone for a second can cause an accident that could have been prevented if they would have just waited to reply to a text message or waited to answer a phone call until they were completely stopped and in a safe place to do so. Use of the cell phone while driving also seems to cause people to drive slower and not pay as much attention when changing lanes.
People could no longer smoke in establishments that served food and customers did not want to come in for drinks, only to step outside whenever they wanted to smoke. Bar owners lost money because of smoking bans; some were even forced out of business. This is especially unfair to business owners who did not receive options before the bans became law. The biggest argument from
4. Cities is a good destination to study It’s have a lot of college or university for you to choose. There is a lot of disadvantages in living in a big city. In a big city, you have to worry about crime. In a small town, you don’t have to worry about getting robbed.
