David Koresh as a media event It is another normal day, where a person returns home and watches television. All of a sudden, he was interrupted with breaking news. The news was so shocking, it was then shared through the all different types of media all over the world, then talked about throughout the world. Soon, it was made as a day of reminder of what had happened, even as a holiday. Sometimes it is political such as the death of John F. Kennedy, and sometimes, it is something terrible yet inevitable in the past like the 9/11. Every country including Malaysia has its own media event which is Independence Day. These are only some of the things that can be done alone through media events. For 51 days starting from February 28th, 1993 in Waco, Texas, a shocking media event was taking place. All eyes were focused to a man named David Koresh who was the leader of a group called the Branch Dravidians. It was during the time when Louis (the wife of the previous prophet, Benjamin Boden) was the prophet when Vernon J. Howell who later changed his name to David Koresh joined in 1983 and the new prophet after facing off twice with Boden’s son, George. Although he was a high-school drop-out, ‘’He was easy-going, handsome, and aggressive, with the flamboyance of a rock star. He could take any Bible verse and discuss it endlessly, which made him seem highly intelligent, even gifted-possibly inspired. (Ramsland, 2008). On February 29, 1993, agents from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms raided the Branch Davidian compound near Waco, Texas. After the raid, four ATF agents and six Branch Davidians were killed. The Branch Davidians were then immediately charged with murder, thus beginning a 51-day siege.
