September 11, 2001 completely changed not only the United States, but the entire world as we know it. On that very day 19 militants associated with the terrorist group al-Qaeda hijacked four airplanes and carried out suicidal missions upon the targets on U.S. soil. Two of the planes crashed into the World Trade Center, the third plane hit the Pentagon, and the fourth plane crashed into a field in Pennsylvania. As recorded over 3,000 people were killed during this onslaught including more than 400 police officers and firefighters. The word “terrorism” permanently became the part of the dictionary. The al-Qaeda had to overcome some difficulties and challenges. One of those challenges was finding the right individuals who would hijack these planes and commit this suicide mission. Out of the 19 people who were the hijackers, 15 were from Saudi Arabia and the others were form Egypt, Lebanon, and the UAE. Most of the hijackers resided in the United States for more than a year before committing the attacks. The hijackers first to arrive in the States were Khalid al-Mihdhar and Nawaf al-Hazmi who resided in the San Diego area, coming to the U.S. over a year and a half before the attacks took place. Next, the three hijacker pilots, Mohamed Atta, Marwan al-Shehhi, and Ziad Jarrah arrived a couple months later to attend flight training. And lastly the fourth hijacker pilot, Hani Hanjour, arrived in San Diego. Although the hijackers actually resided in the United States for over a year, no one even expected anything. Nowadays when one sees a Muslim or someone who looks like a Muslim, that person is automatically deemed as either being dangerous or a terrorist. This fact comes to tell how far the world has come to. The 9/11 attacks changed the people’s perspective upon Muslims and now the stereotype is that all Muslims are bad and that they are all terrorists looking to kill innocent Americans. The next reason as to why the attacks were a success was due to the support that al-Qaeda got from different organizations and countries. They got financial support from countries like Afghanistan, Pakistan, and Syria. It was recorded that before the 9/11 attacks, al-Qaeda spent about 30 million dollars a year while supporting the Taliban with 10-20 million dollars a year. However since that notorious day, a lot of financial support has disappeared.
