Brittany Kear Ms. Carroll English Comp 18 October 2011 Dave Matthews Band- “Funny the Way It Is” It is no doubt that music has played a vital role in our society. Everything from loud, head-banging concerts to religious ceremonies has utilized music because of its breathtaking qualities. Music has many different ways to affect people. In some ways, it is good for the body. In other ways, people think it is nice to listen to. Dave Matthew’s Band uses music to explain positive and negative events that happen everyday around the world. “Funny the Way It Is” by Dave Matthews Band portrays imagery and dramatic irony to display the idea that the world is “funny the way it is” “Lying in the park on a beautiful day/ sunshine in the grass, and the children play/ Siren’s passing, fire engine red/someone’s house is burning down on a day like this” (Matthew lines 1-4). One might feel sympathy for those going through some type of disaster, but their day will not be affected by it. Dave Matthew’s Band proves this in the first verse of their song. Someone’s house is burning down but the children continue to play on the beautiful day as the fire engines rush past them. Dave Matthew’s Band uses imagery again in their song to show how strange the world can be. “A bomb blast brings a building crashing to the floor/You hear the laughter while the children play
