We reflect on these things and wonder, is this really what we want? Is my current job my “Dream Job”? When looking in the mirror, I too have asked, am I happy with my career and direction? What is that dream job and is it obtainable? It’s might be safe to say that most if not all of my fellow students, whether just starting out or continuing their education, are doing so in an effort reach their own idea of what that “Dream Job” may be. In my case as a returning student with many years in the work place including ten years with my current employer, its determined and been confirmed within my corporation, that the invisible but very real ceiling of career advancement has been reached. While hard work, experience, determination, loyalty, drive, and some education are must haves in reaching any career goal, it is simply not enough in today’s corporate environment and competitive world. My job performance and hard work has advanced me about as far as one can go in my company. Today in my current position of Director of Sales, which is a great accomplishment but will fall short of my ultimate goal of becoming Senior Vice President of Sales? The position of Senior Vice President of Sales is unobtainable without the completion of my education. Finishing my bachelor’s degree won’t guarantee future advancement but if
