Cosmetology Research Paper According to the National Accrediting Commission of Cosmetology Arts and Sciences, a cosmetologist is “anyone performing manicures, hair cutting, styling, shampooing, makeup, or other cosmetology services.” A person who is licensed in cosmetology is called a cosmetologist. Additionally, cosmetologists also lighten or darken hair color, advise clients on hair care, straighten hair, and provide permanent waves. They may also provide scalp and facial treatments, makeup analysis, and clean and style wigs and hairpieces. Before deciding on a career in cosmetology, an individual needs to consider whether they have the personal characteristics that are critical to being a success. This includes the ability to work independently, good communication skills, problem solving skills, ability to work under pressure, artistic ability, creativity, patience, and endurance (http://www.berkscareer.com). Nationwide, most states require a high school diploma, or GED, to become a licensed cosmetologist. In addition, most states also require varying amounts of time spent in a state-licensed cosmetology school (Bureau of Labor Statistics). In Maryland, the applicant “must be at least 17 years of age and have completed 9th grade or received a G.E.D. Applicants must submit proof of completion of 1500 hours of training in a cosmetology school, or 24 months as a registered apprentice in a licensed beauty salon” (MD Board of Cosmetology). License Requirements In Maryland, once applicants have completed the educational requirements, they must pass a licensing examination program. In March 2005, the Maryland Board of Cosmetology contracted with Prometric Inc. to conduct this program.
