Responsibilities of my professional role Introduction As an employer myself, my current role is totally different to what I experience in my role as a trainee tutor at my placement, Herbert Of Liverpool Training Centre (HOL). In my own salon, my focus is mainly on the practical aspects / skills of my trainees in helping them to become the best hairdressers / barbers that they can be. I know it is important to have the necessary underpinning knowledge to deal effectively with certain issues that arise in day-to-day work life and I am reassured that the Hairdressing College deal with that. My job was / is to show how it is done on the salon ‘floor’. Now that I am training to be a teacher my views have necessarily widened. This has already helped me to demonstrate and communicate in a more effective way and try out different ways to express myself and make my trainees understand better. Apprenticeship An apprenticeship is aimed at 16/17 year olds and is not time-bound but has a time allowance of approx 2 years. An apprenticeship has 7 mandatory and 2 optional learning units to complete. Key Skills (Numeracy & Literacy) are completed by a portfolio, which is incorporated into the hairdressing programme, and finally an exam. 2. Advanced Apprenticeship An advanced apprenticeship is aimed at learners who have completed an apprenticeship, have good all-round hairdressing skills and are looking to move into a more managerial or supervisory role. This course also lasts approx. 2 years. For Learners to be accepted on to the Level 3 NVQ course they have to sit a comprehensive interview with the Training Team. Currently there are 16 members of staff at HOL, comprising: 3 management team members and 6 Tutors and NVQ Assessors, 1
