The Spanish Southwest colonies compared to the New England Colonies Parker Griebel During the 17th century, many people flocked to the new land of America for religious and political freedom and to take advantage of economic opportunity. The Spanish Southwest and the English colonies of New England differ in many different ways including politically, religiously, and most importantly, economically. The political rulers of the Spanish Southwest colonies kept a tight grip on the people in their territories. They came as conquerors which resulted in an autocratic and they were solely devoted to the furthering of the motherland, Spain. Spain gave their territories little freedom and self rule. Farming played a huge role during settlement. In the Spanish Southwest colonies, there was very little farming due to unfertile lands, distance from the pacific coast was too far, and they lacked many natural resources. These factors resulted in slower economic development for the Spanish Southwest. The New England colonies had a lot more luck when it came to farming but they still lacked natural resources. This let many people to economy to do very well in lumbering, fishing, fur trading, and industries that produced raw materials and goods. The people of the New England colonies relied on slave labor of African Americans but also indentured white servants to help in their manual labor. Many slaves caught diseases too early and too often on plantations to be effective. The Spanish colonies used the Encomienda system to develop. This means they used Native Americans to do manual labor on their land. In conclusion, the New England colonies and the Spanish Southwest colonies excelled in many different areas, some better than others. They used different tactics to affect their success in Politics, Religion, and most importantly, Economics of their
