During the course of the novel of ‘Deadly Unna?’ the readers are exposed to the negativity between the father and his son. This affects Blacky in way that his self-esteem is almost non-existent, and the negativity is prominent throughout the novel. Examples of the neglect shown by his father are that of the time when Bob refers to Blacky as a ‘gutless wonder’, and the journey we take through the story of Blacky’s deteriorating respect for him. The ‘gutless wonder’ incident was a influential part of the novel, as Blacky realises that his Dad isn’t one to take advice of someone he feels is inferior than him, thus saying, ‘My own son, a gutless wonder. A gutless fucking wonder!’ When Blacky explains to his father about the storm, Bob insults him rather than swallow his pride and takes his son’s advice on board.
He is obviously biased against his father and wants his mother’s sole attention. This point of view provides humor because Larry thinks that he actually belongs in his father’s place, as his mother’s sole companion. Sexuality is involved in the story’s humor because the boy sees his mother as a spouse and he thinks that they can have children together. 3. Larry calls it irony that his prayers were answered because he prayed that his father would return from the war, and when his father actually returns from the war, he wishes that he would leave again.
Also, her lack of intelligence has left her with no job and an inability to get a job. In the story, there are many reasons contributing to Jean’s feeling of emptiness and difficulty in her life. To begin, her husband, Ross feels as though he has married beneath himself, and he does not love her anymore. Their marriage was most likely caused by Jean getting pregnant with their son, which made Ross feel like he had to marry her out of force. In the story, Ross specifically tells their son, Kevin that he should try not to marry beneath himself because he will end up stuck in the same situation as him.
But, Siddhartha feels like there's something missing in his blessed life and he wants to go out and search for further enlightenment, to attain Nirvana. Siddhartha feels like he should join the Samanas, holy men who seek enlightenment through austerity, but he needs his fathers approval, which he knows he will not easily attain. Still, Siddhartha goes to his father for his approval, but as Siddhartha expected, his father was angry and would not give it. Siddhartha says he would never disobey his father, but being just as stubborn as his father he decides to stand in the middle of the room until his father gives his blessing. This he did all night, without moving or speaking.
Parents of the 1700's had different parenting values then the parents of today. Lord Chesterfield's letter to his traveling son, whom is traveling all around England, is a prime example of this. At first, Chesterfield seems full of doubt, wondering if his letter will even be of any help to his son. However, later on, the letter shifts into a seemingly threatning tone, telling his son that he needs to treat life like a competition and be better then everybody. With the use of understatement and irony, the letter states his values as a loving, yet strict father who only wants his son to succeed and nothing more.
The expectations set by each other of their father son relationship make it so that it is unobtainable to have the relationship each other want. Amir wants Baba all to himself in the novel and has trouble ac accepting the fact that’s now how it’s going to be. Baba does not value Amir because he is weak in his eyes. This relationship is dynamic in that it changes in the novel because they finally realize they only have each other after enduring tough tests along the way. Naguib the young boy in Half a Day has a different relationship with his dad than Amir to Baba.
As a child, Amir was constantly trying to impress his father, Baba, who looked up to Hassan more than he did Amir. This caused Amir to always be jealous of Hassan, and would constantly test Hassan's loyalty. This was one of the things that I hated about Amir. No matter how much Hassan did for him, he still tested him. Amir would rather his father love him and be proud of him for one day than help his best friend from getting raped.
Okonkwo was one of the strongest and most respected men in his society. Yet, he feared becoming an exact image of his father; therefore, embodying the values of manliness, he took on his own approach to life and how he dealt with problems in society. Okeke, his father, has a strong opposition in this matter since he does not want his son to be the first one in history marrying a girl who had been raised with a different culture. For his father, it simply defrauds his own culture; nevertheless, that does not stop Nnaemeka from being with whom he really wants. Next is Achebe’s story focused on three main points: characters, conflicts, and theme. In Achebe’s story, the characters are the ones who develop the story due to the difference of thinking that each of them has. The story has Nnaemeka as the main character.
Nnaemeka marries out of tradition, where the father chooses who he wants his son to marry. His son chose himself and that is a great disrespect to his people. It causes pain and disappointment to the father. The father is in pain because he couldn’t believe his son went out of tradition and decided to marry someone of his choice. “..Father’s silence was infinitely more menacing than a flood of threatening speech.
