Unit 209 Support children and young people behaviour How you could be an effect role model to children and young people In your placement in the school I believe I could be an effective role model by setting a good example to the children I work with. As studies have shown, children learn more from copying behaviour around them, rather than just being told what to do. Children are mostly influenced by teachers, parents, friends and support workers. All the adults should be aware of their own behaviour and mannerism, and the effect could have on the children. Children can pick up behaviour and attitudes from adults from around them .For this reason, I feel my appearance must always be presentable and my clothes should be appropriate to wear in a school setting.

When working with children and young people it is important for them to feel relaxed within the environment and the people they come in to contact with; this promotes a child’s ability and enables positive development. We are required within our job to build relationships rather quickly while maintaining the professional boundaries. Children and young people who have a positive relationship with a practitioner are more likely to display positive behaviour, and have confidence enabling them to communicate successfully. When children who are in a nursery setting feel comfortable with staff it becomes easier for them to separate with their parents and engage in activities and play.
1.2 There are various factors which contribute to the development of positive relationships; these principles of relationship building can be divided into categories, the key ones being the need for effective and clear communication with any human being. The basic aim is to make one feel comfortable and secure in our company. Body language, facial expressions and gestures are also crucially important in effective communication. we must show respect and courtesy, from the simple ‘please’ and ‘thank you’ to listening to peoples points of views by using warm tones of voice especially with children and young adults, courtesy and respect provide a good foundation to agreeable relationships. 1.3 Effective communication is not just about speaking and listening.

Making sure you are listening to the children when they are talking, this will show them that you are interested and value their opinion.

Develop Positive Relationship with C.Y.P and Others Involved in their Care It is important to have a positive relationship with children and young adults because if they feel comfortable and secure with the adult and their setting weather it is a childminder, a nursery or a school they will separate more easily from their parent /carer, if they feel emotionally secure they are more likely to participate in the play and learning activities. Children need to have a strong relationship with the staff to feel comfortable and secure this will help them to enjoy themselves and less likely to show unwanted behaviour. From the staffs point of view a close relationship means they learn to recognise their needs and are able to meet these needs, the staff can also recognise their expressions and emotions and are able to respond quickly and more effectively to the child, this makes the child more comfortable and confident so they then talk to the staff enabling their language to develop weather they are very young and just learning to speak or are older and learning more complex words and sentences. A strong relationship is also needed so that the staff knows the child they know where they sit on a development chart and can plan activities that the child will enjoy and be interested in and will develop from. One of the most important ways to build a relationship is communications whether it is smiling and cooing to a new born baby or having a discussion with a young adult effective communication is a must.
Children and young people should feel comfortable to express themselves freely and to know that adults are responding positively to these expressions. Teachers and supporting staff have to know the child and her family to be able to build a trusting relationship and to break communication barriers, if there is any.
