Pressures on Students Today In his essay “College Pressures” William Zinsser exposes the pressures that college students faced at Yale University in the 1970s. He categorizes the pressures into four types: economic pressure, parental pressure, peer pressure, and self-induced pressure. He also explains how these pressures impact the students in a bad way, causing them to narrow down their minds into one small path rather than finding their true interests. His intention isn’t only to understand these pressures, but to show how unnecessary they are. Also, his true intention is for students to explore themselves and find their true interests instead of aiming for well paying jobs. Even though his essay is being read by a huge group of college students, these pressures continue to be with the students, and they don’t seem to be going anywhere. These pressures have not gotten any better since the 1970s, in fact they have gotten so much worse. It is naïve for the author to wish for students to experiment themselves and find their true interest when we live in a world where economy is so bad that we can’t afford to fall down. Economic pressure is very hard on students today. Colleges’ tuitions have been increased year after year. Students take out loans, so they can afford to attend colleges. Having to pay back loans after one year of graduation causes them to set their mind straight to jobs that will get them out of debt as soon as possible. High unemployment rate and people being laid off makes the economic pressure, which plays a very important role in students’ lives. This is not only putting them on to a spot where they have to be extremely careful about what they do and focus more about their future, but also making them avoid taking classes to find what they’re really interested in because those classes may lead to no job.
