Cause and Effect of Stress on a College Student College can be considered a major stressor for many people. Defined as the way the body responds to any change or challenge in life (Driscoll, 2011). Stress can be both good and bad. When stressors are managed properly, they can be useful and healthy, but when stress becomes unmanageable, it can have adverse health effects (Driscoll, 2011). Stress is a natural part of life. Good stress is the rush of adrenaline that allows a person to win a race, get projects finished and turned in on time, or meet and accomplish other challenges that someone may encounter on a daily basis. However, stressing can turn bad when you are unable to overcome it. Every day there are responsibilities, obligations and pressures that change and challenge people. Stressful situations come from many different directions when a person enters the college life. College is a wonderful opportunity not only to further your education, but also to experiment with life before it gets too serious. However, having said that, college life is not without its stressful situations. Today students have a lot of stress because of a lot of different reasons: finances, relationships, and the pressure to succeed appear to be the most common factors. Possibly one of the biggest stressors for most college students is the considerable debt they will have to take on, in order to afford tuition fees and textbooks. More and more students have to pay for college on their own, or with little assistance from their parents. Quite often this is a source of great concern for an individual that is straight out of high school and may not be financially stable (Driscoll, 2011). At the same time as the debt alone is stressful, the need to service this debt can cause students to over-extend themselves. This means that they have to take on a second job or work long hours
