Strike one! Strike two! The anticipation of the third strike is inevitable. All I could do is stand there and wait until the batter was struck out or the ball was hit. In a softball game, players have to be attentive because in one moment, a ball can strike your face without warning. I played short stop, and on constant alert because in one inning I could be thrown or hit ten balls. Most balls come at me like a torpedo launched underwater, fast and without warning. Enjoying softball is quite simple; playing this position is not as simple as it may appear. The qualities of a great short stop are attentiveness, aggressiveness, quick reflexes, and a lot of practice in order to win a game. I was constantly running in every direction, and the position of the glove constantly changed. I am forced to be aggressive or else the ball would slip away from me. My coach always said “Instead of letting the ball come to you, you need to attack it”. These words always crossed my mind when the ball was hit to the ground far in front of me. Rather than waiting for it to stop, I attacked it and sent it spiraling to first base. A ball will be thrown to short stop when the player is covering first or second base. It is obvious that the short stop has to be aggressive or else she could drop the ball when it is thrown at her or squirm because it is coming fast to her face or even get hit because nerves overwhelmed her. Without that confidence, many balls will be dropped, go under legs, over heads, or straight to the face. Another quality of a short stop is the ability to have quick reflexes like a cat because some balls are thrown so quickly that a quick response is needed. Since balls are constantly hit to the short stop, the cat-like reflexes are put into play. One gains these reflexes in practice and in time they also become second nature to one as time goes by. The ball can be intimidating at times because of its reckless behavior. Since the short stop is just as aggressive, it will stop the reckless ball.
