Motivation Paper CJA/444 May 22, 2013 Bryan Cook Motivation Paper Love and belonging Maslow’s third hierarch of need is interpersonal and includes the emotional sense of belongingness. The need for belonging is particularly intense in infantile and may disregard the necessity for safety as observed with children who latch onto caregivers who are abusive. Defects within this stage of Maslow’s hierarchy by reason of shunning, ostracism, neglect, and hospitalization may influence the person’s capacity to maintain and form fervently meaningful relations, namely, intimacy, family, and friendship. Numerous individuals’ are prone to clinical depression, loneliness, and social anxiety with the lack of the belonging or love factor. The requirement for belonging may weaken the security and physiological needs, contingent on the potency of the peer-pressure (Maslow, n.d.). Mutual friendship and trust among officers who spend numerous hours on-the-job together could sometimes have both unfavorable and favorable consequences formerly known as “two edged sword.” For example, a police officer’s job cultivates unity and teamwork with fellow officers, known as “esprit de corps.” The patrol unit helps the officer on-the-job feel confident in receiving backup necessary in critical areas. The confidence inspires a sense of belonging that may generate an “us and them” perception of the community. These perceptions make the police officers protective of each other and challenging when it comes time to retire. In addition, there is added stress to an officer when a fellow officer is killed or leaving; this is hard to accept within the patrol unit (The Heavy Badge, 2013).
