Amanda Viechec CJ 340 Missed Lecture essay from Unit 1 There are four types of character when examining police character; the bad, the uncontrolled, the self-controlled, and the excellent. The person with bad character looks for opportunities in which they can victimize others and use other people to their advantage. An example of a police officer with bad character would be a cop who takes drugs from evidence for their own use before officially noting the amount that was retrieved. Individual with bad character should never be involved in law enforcement. The person with uncontrolled character could be trained to be police officers, but they are often weak willed and subjected to temptation. An example of such an officer would be someone who thinks that the cops take it easy on criminals and takes it upon himself to punish criminals. The person with self-controlled character has greater self-discipline and can perform his duties appropriately, yet could feel resentment from having too much responsibility placed upon him. The ideal cop has excellent character. They possess outstanding habits of character and are truly trustworthy. They take pride in their work and have peace of mind knowing what they stand for. The mission of police is to safeguard lives and to protect the property of the people they serve. The government has a system of checks and balances so that no single part of the government could have uncontrolled power. To have controlled power they must have order, which is why laws exist. Public trust is also a big part of citizens’ relationship with law enforcement. Society must have a government in order to enjoy their freedom and they must have a trusting relationship with the law enforcement that is selected to govern them.
