The Army as a Profession The Army is a profession of arms for three reasons. It provides security for the nation, which is something the United States can't provide for itself. The Army produces uniquely expert work which requires years of study and practice. Army Soldiers are motivated by the privilege and honor of service to the United States. The following essay will define the criteria for a profession and what it means to be a member of that profession. The white paper defines the profession of arms as a vocation made up of experts who are certified in ethical application of land combat power, entrusted to defend the Constitution and the rights and interests of the American people. In order for an occupation to be considered a profession it must gain the trust of their client through ethic. There are key attributes for the profession of arms at the organizational level. Upholding these values day-to-day is the most important role of a Soldier. Loyalty is important to the Army because it is our obligation to support and defend the Constitution of the United States. We take an oath as Soldiers which is critical to the success in order to build trust. Duty is not only fulfilling your obligations but making a continual dedicated effort to do what is right. Respect is important because society needs to have a positive perception of the Army in order for it to be successful. Selfless Service is putting the needs of the Army before your own, but also taking care of yourself and your subordinates. Honor provides the moral compass for individuals. It is the glue for the Army Values. Integrity and personal courage are important because a Soldier must do what is right all the time even if they are scared. A deep understanding and application of the Army Values is key to being a professional
