Bennington Sjarif “Analyse the way in which stories are told” in your response refer to at least 2 of narration. The short story “A Christmas Gift” by Vasso Kalamaras delivers the story to the audience by using various narrative techniques. Narratives are told using these techniques to engage the audience. This essay is going to explore the way Vasso Kalamaras uses narrative techniques to deliver the story. One of the techniques used by this author is Flashback. A flashback is a situation when a character in the story remembers something from the past. It is usually a vivid mental image of a past traumatic experience. In the short story “A Christmas Gift” the author uses a long flashback to explain most of the story. Flashback Is used when Stavros was gazing at the bicycle, he remembers the day before when he was eaves dropping outside his mother’s room while she was scolding his father “Do we have to take so seriously every demand of a child? The irritable voice of his nagging mother still rung in his ears from the day before”. The flashback kept on going, which the technique is used to explain that the father is an alcoholic and that they are having financial difficulties. It also shows that the father Stavros’s parents fight a lot, as his father is useless and the mother is frustrated about the situation “Stavros had better take a different road from you, you waster.. you only worry about pleasing yourself. All that remains over for us is debts. Debts, debts, and you stinking of sour wine.” Flashback is a powerful technique as it explains the story or situation in great detail, and most importantly it is from Stavros’s point of view. This allows that Audience to understand how Starvos sees the situation and that it fills him with despair and hatred “I hate you, I hate you!’ He cried”.
