Resubmission : Unit 5: The principles underpinning the role of the practitioner working with children E1 The practitioner’s main responsibilities in working in a professional relationship with children in schools is making sure children are listened to and valuing their opinions. Children should feel secure and valued because it will make them feel that they have a sense of belonging and including them no matter what their race, religion, abilities, disabilities or culture is. Listening to children is an important part in a relationship with children. Another value of a multi-professional approach is that they can safeguard children when abuse is noticed or suspected, the multi-agency team comes together to take any necessary steps to protect the child and can also support the family. The value of working in a multi-professional approach, when working with parents is by providing and supporting families with what they need. For example if families are living in poor quality and poorly maintained housing which may have damp in, this can cause diseases for instance asthma. This will affect the children’s learning and development as they will be ill or taking time of school. As Maslow’s hierarchy places needs in order which is most important and the first basic physical need is shelter which is priority. Professionals can support families like this by referring them to a housing society, which can help them get a new house. Also another benefit is that different professionals and agencies work together in partnership with parents early on when there are difficulties are arising in the families and not waiting until something serious happens before taking action. It is important to have a Health and Safety put in place, so the whole school knows what to do if something occurred in the setting, for example a fire drill went off, the children would know the procedure of what to do and wouldn’t feel scared, because they have been taught and shown of what to do in an event of a fire incident. Security arrangements are put into place so children are safe and not in danger. In my setting they have fobs for each member of staff that come into the school and for visitors there is a sign in and out book and a badge is given to them so staff and children know who they are. On my first day of placement I was asked for my CRB and given policies to read, one was a Health and Safety Policy, this was me to understand what the school policies and procedures were is anything
