Why Would People Cheat Cheating is a dishonest way of achieving certain goals by an individual or a group of people and it can occur both consciously and unconsciously. According to the survey, there are more and more students who cheat in school. They cheat by buying other people’s articles and use them as their own or by copying other people's answers during a test and so on. However, cheating can occur not only in school, but it can also happen in other places such as in businesses and in sports. Cheating and plagiarism are two different concepts. Plagiarism is a common form of cheating. It is a kind of violation of someone else's copyright and it mostly applies to article writing, especially in term papers and research papers. According to “Rules for Writers” written by Diana Hacker, “failing to cite quotations and borrowed ideas”; “failing to enclose borrowed language in quotation marks” and “failing to put summaries and paraphrase in your own words” are considered as plagiarism (415). There are a lot reasons for people to cheat, but that doesn't mean we have to cheat; instead, we need to make efforts to stop cheating. What are the reasons for people to cheat? Different people answer this question in different ways. Some try to analyze the reasons for cheating from social point of view. Others try to find the answers psychologically and morally. David Callahan is an author who analyzes cheating sociologically. In his article, "Cheating Culture", he mentions, there are three forces that cause cheating: “A focus on Money and Winning”(3),” Fear and Insecurity”(4) and “Sleeping Watchdogs”(5). As Callahan says in his article, winners in American’s society are usually rich and have a certain power. At the same time, they are admired and given power.
