With reference to education evaluate the impact of continuity and change in the country you have studied and the strategies and causes of change. Education in Vietnamese plays a key role in society and is valued more than wealth or power. Aspects of continuity and change in the Vietnamese society have had many positive impacts on their education system in which the Vietnamese youth are educated today. Large amounts of change have occurred within the society of Vietnamese, particularly within the education sector but these changes have not altered the high value placed on education. People associated with knowledge are highly valued and hold a high-ranking position on the Vietnamese social pyramid. The want for knowledge and wisdom is found in the four fundamental principles in Vietnamese culture, as an individual’s success will bring honour and pride to all family members. Education is essential in order to achieve high social stature and secure a good job in the future. The constant high regard placed on education came as a result of Ho Chi Minh gaining power in North Vietnam in 1945. In 1945 about 90% of Vietnam’s population was illiterate and had had no basic primary schooling. By the 1990’s, 80% of Vietnam’s entire population was literate and almost all children had the guarantee of at least five years of schooling. The French schooling system took over from the Mandarin administered system, dissolving it to create a more Western-oriented one. This first change to Vietnam’s education system resulted in the population being required to learn the French language. This change is still present today in Vietnamese culture, with many Vietnamese dialects including French terms such as ‘beaucoup’ for ‘many’ and ‘merci’ for ‘thankyou’.
