Abstract Why Puerto Rican emigrate to US and other foreign countries? Is there a correlation between the economic level and educational degree with the decision of leaving the island? A report made by Ports Authority in 2010 states that all passengers leaving the island represent a migratory movement of 31,000 people. The percentage of emigrants out of the labor force has risen between 2008 and 2010 by nearly 20%. The Puerto Rican people, who flee the country with no job, are still searching after arriving to the US.
By 2050, the Black population will increase roughly 15%, making them the second largest minority group in America. Racial diversity in the United States poses very interesting challenges to the nation's existing financial and social services institutions ultimately having a profound effect on education, health care, Social Security, and natural resources. We are often reminded of looming problems such as fuel reserves, fresh water resources, unhealthy air quality as well as traffic congestion and diminishing wetlands through the media, many of us do not take seriously. The unfortunate reality is that America will not be able to accommodate its potential growing number of citizens and the increasing elderly population
Anh Nguyen Date 4/17/09 ENG 101 Vietnamese Immigrants in America According to the 2000 Census, there are currently 1,223,736 Vietnamese Americans. Vietnamese immigrants become a part of American society, and they are likely to belong to groups classified as ethnic minorities in the U. S. For many years, Vietnamese immigrants have come to America for pursuing the freedom life, for more opportunities and economic prosperity. It’s amazing how Vietnamese coming to America with nothing but hopes and sorrows have formed a new ethnic group on the American scene. However, along with the journey adjustment to American life, these newcomers encounter the differences in culture and profound generation conflict in their families. “Despite their stunning success, the Vietnamese have not adjusted to America without costs and difficulties” (Freeman 18).
Introduction Immigration may be caused by several factors. These include “economic, political, family re-unification, natural disaster, poverty or the wish to change one's surroundings voluntarily” (Immigration Restriction League, 2013). It is well known that the United States is a country of immigrants, with its most popular immigrants having been the Pilgrims. However, immigration in the United States has come a long way since the Pilgrims arrived in Plymouth Harbor in December 16, 1620 (Who Were the Pilgrims, 2013). In 2010 several hundred million people immigrated to the United States increasing the total U.S. population to approximately 340 million, and by the year 2050 it is estimated that with immigration this population will reach 397 million (Immigration To The United States, 2013).
According to the Department of Homeland Security's Office of Immigration Statistics (OIS), the number of unauthorized immigrants resided in the United States as of March 2012 is estimated to be 11.6 million (Frequently Asked). As we all know, the more consumers spend their money, the more consumers help build the economy, helping businesses stay open and most importantly, help create jobs. One argument against illegal immigrants is that they are taking jobs that should belong to citizens. The truth is that the spending by illegal immigrants employs about 5% of the total workforce of the United States. Taking that into consideration, if the United States deported all illegal immigrants, the unemployment rate would rise from 8% to about 13%.
Roosevelt started the welfare program he also gave a stern warning that in history society had become dependent on welfare and as a result, it decayed the societies of moral fiber. He went even further to say that it was a violation of American tradition.14 More and more people are becoming dependent on welfare every year. To classify as dependent, more than half of your monthly income must be welfare.15 Did you know that in the state of California you can get $450 a week for unemployment if your yearly income for your last job was over $11,674?16 For a single mother with two children under the age of five in California for one month you could get $131.58 from WIC, $526 from food stamps, free medical, and $704 from TANF.17-19 That is at least $3161.58 a month for raising your children, and who says being a stay at home mother isn’t a full time job? That is why it is so easy to get dependent on welfare. Who would want to work and have less money than if they stayed at
Research shows that between 40 and 50 percent of wage loss among low skilled Americans is due to the immigration of low skilled workers. Some native workers lose not just wages but their jobs through immigrant competition. An estimated 1,880,000 American workers are displaced from their jobs every year by immigration. (Colorado Alliance for Immigration Reform) 71% of respondents in a 2006 Quinnipiac University Poll believed that enforcement of immigration laws would require additional measures beyond a border fence, with 65% of
Most early immigrants—whether Chinese, Japanese, or Filipino, for example—sought employment as unskilled labor. By the 1960s, this trend began to reverse, as many Chinese and Japanese, in particular, migrated under policies designed to attract skilled laborers and professionals. Those seeking enhanced employment opportunities were later joined by Southeast Asians fleeing the political upheavals in that part of the world. During and after the Korean War (1956–1965), many of those impressed by their view of Americans’ affluence, together with political dissidents, fled to the United States. During the 1970s, nearly 200,000 Vietnamese emigrated to the United States—many of whom were admitted with refugee status.
Researchers, supported by Deloitte, Goldman Sachs, Pfizer and Time Warner, conducted 2,952 surveys of working-aged men and women and gathered qualitative and quantitative data to conclude that many Asian-Americans, whether immigrant or native born, find it hard to "fit in" the upper management ranks. The projected percentage increase between 2008 and 2050 in the population of people who identify themselves as Asian in the United States will increase by one hundred and sixty-one percent, which compares with a forty-four percent increase in the population as a whole over the same period of time. There will be approximately forty million United States residents by the year 2050 that identify themselves as Asians and hold about nine percent of the population in the United
Immigration: A Problem Increasing Every Year Immigration Immigration started back in 1492 with Columbus and the pilgrims when he wanted to discover more land. He was really looking for a quicker route East when he stopped on what is now called America, and people have migrated from that point on. So mostly everyone in America back then was an immigrant. But it wasn’t until the year of 1892, when more than 12 million immigrants made their first stop in America at the Ellis Island Immigration Station. As a matter of fact, more than 40 percent of Americans can trace their family history back to Ellis Island.
