VIETNAMESE MIGRATION IN THE UNITED STATES Intro to Geography 201-50 Midterm Paper Migration is the movement of people that chooses to permanently change their place of residence outside of their origin. Every year, approximately 1,021,884 immigrants enter the United States. These immigrants came from all walks of life, all over the world to the United States. This is what makes the United States what it is today; the most diverse country in the world. One of the many races that migrated to the United States is the Vietnamese race. After the fall of Saigon, Vietnamese refugees have fled their homeland to seek for a better life. Now, 30 years later, they have become an industry of their own. According to the latest census, there are approximately 1.2 million Vietnamese Americans living in the United States. This makes Vietnamese Americans the fifth largest immigrant group in the United States , right after the Mexican, Filipino, Chinese, and Indian foreign-born (Lehman, 2000). This paper will focus on the push and pull factors that forced the Vietnamese to leave their homeland, and where did they settled and why. There were many factors that led the Vietnamese to immigrate to the US. Some were push factors and some were pull factors. According to the text, a push factor can include reasons such as housing costs, rising crime rates, high tax rates, poor climates, or lack of satisfying or well paying jobs. A pull factor can include the promise of higher paying jobs, better physical settings, affordable and availability housing, desirable climate, or longing for family togetherness (Kuby, Harner & Gober, 2010). The pull factors, which cause the Vietnamese to migrate, are the instability created by the Vietnam War, poor political and economic situation in Vietnam, and the war between China and Vietnam in 1979.
