Many people believe that talking on a cell phone while driving a car is essential. Cell phones are a great way of finding help when having an emergency with a car, and they also keep in touch with family and friends. However, driving while talking on a cell phone is a dangerous habit that affects negatively on society. Those long, excessive chats on the “cell” while driving can do a number of things to you. It can reduce your ability to drive, decrease your reaction time, and affect others around you. Students from McGill University recently did a study showing that chatting on the “cell” while driving significantly reduced your ability to drive. When driving, your main focus and attention is on the road, but when chatting with friends; it takes your attention to the conversation, thus losing focus on the road. Recently, one man who was chatting away on his cell phone while driving lost his focus and attention and coasted through a stop sign; crashing into another car that was stationary. Therefore, the study done at McGill proves it will reduce your ability to drive with solid evidence. Driving while chatting on a cell phone have shown, and proved many times, to slow down your reaction time. One study showed that a driver who was not talking on a cell phone was ten times more faster to stop at an in-coming stop sign than a driver talking on a “cell”. Cell phones while driving can also affect other people on the road. Since the driver’s attention is to the conversation; they could cause trouble with other people sharing the road. However, if you choose to talk on a cell phone, be prepared to have a slower reaction time. When driving while chatting on a cell phone; it can also affect others around you.
