English 1010-Wed 27 March 2011 Smoking: It is worse than you think No one really realizes the harm smoking does to your body, least of which being the teens that take it on early due to peer pressure, defiance of their parents, or low self-esteem. The effects can really make you think twice if you actually research it before just lighting up, because it makes you look cool; physical abnormalities, respiratory problems, and multiple devastating effects on the body, are what most smokers fail to realize that these things will kill you faster than most other problems. There is not a day in my life I have not seen someone wanting to fit into the “in-crowd”. I understand the want to be there, but smoking is definitely not the way to go about getting in. Sure, your friends all look cool doing it, and they constantly say, “It’s awesome, you should try it! You won’t get addicted.” It amazes most to find out how false that statement truly is. There are a lot of teens that have good mind sets to see they will be the cool ones by staying “Above The Influence”. Starting to smoke to defy their parents’ best judgment of how bad for you it really is, is not a plausible reason for teens to start smoking. Some teenagers just have the tenacity of alligator when their parents talk to them about the risks and complications of smoking. It is understandable for young people to want to defy their parents, because they think they don’t know what they are talking about. Some say it relaxes them or relives stress of their hectic days, when in fact, it does no such thing. It has also been reported that smoking works as a conversation starter, where asking for a light is the beginning of said conversation, that it helps cure loneliness and boredom. Some teens have low self-esteem and as explained earlier, they think it could make them look cooler and feel better about themselves, but
