April 2, 2012 Malcolm X Essay The Autobiography of Malcolm X did come across some inappropriate moments. For example, the drug dealing, gambling, sex, and race. In my opinion, parents should not object the material in the autobiography because it is material students should know and be aware of. Things like this happen in the real world and parents do not want their children to be completely oblivious to their bad surroundings. Even though there was a lot of things in the Autobiography that parents may not find okay for students to read, they need to understand that things like that can happen anywhere in the world.
Foul and harsh language is used in dialogue and in Conrad’s thoughts in the novel as well. All of these topics and areas of the novel have been targeted as reason for censorship in schools around the country. Many parents feel that the use of ‘bad language’ encourages it. They gain opinion and personality on what they hear and see. Not knowing any better, a child will naively believe what they are told, certain that it is true because they do not know better; it is part of life to learn that not everything one hears is accurate. Children are freshly exposed to life and must learn the ways of the world through their environment. If a child is told an extraordinary tale that would be seen as absurd in the minds of adults, said child may be willing to believe it despite obvious evidence against it—like Santa Clause. The holly, jolly, red-clad elf is a common story often told to children during the holiday season.
“If Huck and Jim are going to be free, they’ve got to take care of themselves …‘With freedom comes responsibility.’” (Adventures[…]). They are both taking a risk with each other because Huck was thought to be dead. These two factors are what lead them to be so close; they needed each other to survive. All of these things were Mark Twain’s way of using satire in this novel. Many books not written in historical context contain vulgar language and are still allowed in high school.
Young children can be self conscious they can think, but they don’t think about thinking. Self consciousness is exacerbated by the Imaginary Audience. Teens feel that a group of people are always watching and judging them on everything that they do. When a teen feels like they are getting judge by an audience that doesn’t exist this is called Imaginary audience. Imaginary audience arises from the larger concept of adolescent egocentrism.
In other words, authors have the right to write about whatever they choose. No one should have the right to decide whether or not what an author has published is good or bad. Parents of high school students were afraid that the book would go against their family values and morals.
Debating the Banning of a Great Novel Samuel Langhorne Clemens, better known as Mark Twain, is responsible for the controversy caused by the novel The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn. This novel has been banned in many high schools across the nation for the foul language applied and the sentiment it brings to those who may relate to it. Yet many are unaware that the purpose of the novel is not to bring about resentment but to appeal the reader to the circumstances in which the characters lived. Some disregard the notice at the beginning of the novel, which contains an explanation for the dialect used. Many choose to find a plot in the novel, although the author clearly states that the novel purposely lacks a plot.
It has been said that all the violence in the world would slow down if we showed our children love and attention. So does that mean give them everything they want and never punish them? What about special needs children is it appropriate to us corporal punishment on them? So many people say do not use spanking as a form of punishment children with special needs children. Some kids with special needs do not feel pain so to spank them would be pointless.
Final Product #2 By banning books, it creates a negative effect on kids and adults and possibly even eliminate the teachings of life lessons for students. Going through life without the knowledge of what else is out there besides “good” in people can be harsh for some people especially for kids. Kids would not be able to handle life too well in the real world, if the whole time when they were younger they were being protected from all the "bad things" and “bad people.” Many people decide to do what they think is best for the safety of children, but in reality when kids grow up to be adults sometimes it harms them in more ways than helping them. Books shouldn't be banned from society, but some books do have suggestive content or profanity. When the so-called “negative parts” of the books remain, kids gain knowledge of what is and what is not good to do, say, or act.
By limiting the drinking age to 21, the government is just encouraging students to make illegal behavior and dishonesty. Due to the majority of underage drinkers, students are disobedient to the law; which leads up to criminal penalties. One example is that students are using fake ID Cards, to have the right to drink. When caught, these penalties can be severe and costly. It is obvious that the law has not succeeded in preventing the underage group from drinking.
