Cristy Martinez Period: 07 Mrs. Zachan Language Arts November 01, 2011 The Catcher in the Rye The Catcher in the Rye should not be banned from schools. There are many schools who think that Catcher is a bad influence on teens however it is quite the opposite. The Catcher in the Rye by JD Salinger should not be banned from schools because teenagers can learn from Holden’s mistakes and teens are mature enough to tell wrong from right. Many parents are appalled and think that the book should be banned because of the profanity, teenage sex, and other inappropriate behaviors. However, there is a reason to all his misbehavior. Teens are mature enough to read profanity and not make childish comments regarding them. When comparing the amount of profanity in the book to other contents it isn’t even half as bad. He even tries to erase the profanity. He said “it drove me crazy…I thought Phoebe and all the other little kids will see it…I rubbed it out …” (260-261). He tries to preserve the viridity of the children by erasing the profanity showing what kind of person he really is. Even though he constantly curses himself, he never uses profanity in front of small children. Also just because things are written in a book doesn’t mean that they will actually do it. For example when Holden says “we could drive up to Massachusetts...And stay in this cabin...later on we can get married or something...” (171) Even though these ideas occur to him no teenager would actually do this because teens are smart enough to know about the consequences and results. A very good example of this is his date Sally who is roughly around the same age as him and thinks things through and is aware of the consequences. The catcher in the Rye should not be banned. The book simply is about struggle and mistakes that other people can learn from. Although some of the contents may be harsh there is always a reason behind Holden’s motives.
