Holden’s troubled state • Bipolar • Always depressed • Troubled dealing with allies death • He’s a teenager that still acts like a kid. • Hates socializing with people My opinion on Holden Caulfield is that he is unreliable as a narrator. “If there’s one thing hate, it’s movies. Don’t even mention them to me.” (page 2) It states that Holden hates movies, yet he’s always going to go see them. If he hated them so much he wouldn’t go to seem them. Holden’s personality, in my opinion is far from the ordinary teen. “Finally, what I decided I’d do, I decided I’d go away. I decided I’d never go home again and I’d and I’d never go away to another school again” He’s sixteen and he’s already deciding to drop out of school to go away from everyone and starting his new life on his own. He’s always depressed and he doesn’t like socializing with people. 2. • Older brother and younger sister getting along and bonding • Teenagers not wanting to be social with others. • Kids smoking and parents not worrying about it • Teens walking in the streets at night My examples are very similar to Holden Caulfield’s behavior. Holden has this special bond with his younger sister phoebe, that’s very unusual to find nowadays. Most teenagers like being social with others and making new friends, unlike Holden. When Phoebe’s mom knows that she smoked, she didn’t say anything to her, she acted as though it wasn’t a big deal. Finally, in the book Holden’s always walking around at night trying to figure out what to do. 3. My opinion on what the red hunting hat symbolizes is protection. Holden uses this hat as a form of protection, to help him feel safe and secure. The color of the hat is red, like the color of Allie and Phoebe’s hair. I think that when he wears it, it
