When I was young, I always wondered what teachers did to prepare for each day of class. I always thought that it would be a rewarding career because you could have the chance to influence so many children's lives. That is why when I was first choosing my classes for high school, I chose early childhood education as one of my electives. This class is a taste of what it is like to be a teacher. When I was little, I also liked to go to my sister's dance competitions to watch her dance. Luckily, my sister's career is a combination of the two. She is a dance teacher at Manatee School for the Arts and I asked one of her co-workers if I could shadow her for the day. My goal for this Career Shadows Research Paper is to determine if teaching will be a good career choice for me. I decided to shadow Elyse Born, who is a dance teacher at Manatee School for the Arts. This does not mean that all she does is teach different dances. She too has a curriculum she has to follow. She has to tell about the history of a certain genre of dance that she is teaching at the moment to students in grades 6-12. Along with teaching the history of dance, she also choreographs different numbers for the students to perform. Teachers have to arrive at school at 8:45-9:00 A.M. and stay until at least 5:00 P.M. However, these are just the hours inside of the classroom. There are so many countless hours that they spend choreographing, finding/mixing music, and planning their lessons and activities for each class. There are different skills and education training required for this occupation. Patience, a passion for teaching, and leadership are three necessary qualities to have when wanting to become a teacher.
