I chose this quote because it tells us that killing animals happens faster than someone gathering knowledge. Next, this book relates to society because many animals in the world are becoming endangered today. An example of this is the Bonobos from the book. Also, there are many problems in the world today just like the war in Congo. Around the world there are Army’s like the one in this book, that do not care what they are shooting at or killing, even if it is a poor animal that has done nothing wrong.
General deterrence is a punishment which aims to the whole society from committing similar crimes. This kind of punishment is used to generate fear in the general population through the offender’s punishment. How is Deterrence Related to Humiliation? I believe Deterrence relates to humiliation because it modifies a person for what they had done is wrong; this act deters them from repeating the same crime again. However, this is another way to show others potential law breakers the outcome if they were to commit the offense.
A rule is something that determines the way in which we behave. The difference between laws & morality is the reasons behind following those rules, whether we submit ourselves to them voluntarily – as would be the case with moral rules, or because it is enforced by laws which would be reasoning behind following legal rules. There can be seen a close relationship between law & morality, for example murder. Murder is considered universally immoral and therefore is enforced by law & also carries the greatest sentencing. The question can be asked, is the sentencing so high because of how immoral it is or simply as punishment for taking someone’s life so your life should be punished for the duration of your existence.
Genocide is the specific targeting and killing of culture or race of people, which is unethical and wrong. Terrorists perform acts of violence meant to disrupt daily life by causing pain and suffering of others. Rape is a sexual act forced upon someone, which destroys the life of another for the self-gratification of one sick individual. Goodman is correct with his statement about certain things are just wrong and unethical in a society. The examples provided are supported and represent unethical acts by people.
Us Against Them In wars, in cruelty, and even in sports there is a force that allows humans to fight, to abuse, and to compete. We separate ourselves from our opponents; we dehumanize them in order to justify our actions against them. The examples of this are many, they are driven by fear, and they only hurt those involved. In Matt Ridley’s book The Rational Optimist, he shows that humans prosper when they do not separate themselves from each other. In John Steinbeck’s book, The Grapes of Wrath, he shows the cruelties people are capable of when they do separate themselves from others and District 9, a film directed by Neill Blomkamp, makes clear what can happen when people dehumanize another species.
Although Frank is a respected war hero who saved many lives and also idolized by David but when he treats the young Indian women, he molest and rapes them. He shows no sign of pity for them and will kill them after molesting or raping. Julian Hayden is a man who loves gaining control of others. He assumes that he’s above the law so ‘they couldn’t arrest us’. When Julian slowly found out about Frank’s crimes, he thinks that Frank should not be arrested because he is the war hero.
Many slaves were beaten with whips almost every day for no reason at all. Some slaves were even beaten to death by their masters. Frederick Douglass even recalls when one slave disobeyed his master, and he got shot and killed right on the spot. (Douglass 2000-2010) Also, by law these killings were not seen as a crime in the south because they felt that if a slave’s master killed them, they had a good reason for doing so. Therefore, a slave’s life seemed worthless in the world, and this stopped many slaves from trying to escape because they knew that if they were caught they would most likely be killed.
I believe that you must use any means necessary to achieve your goal, whether it is being violent or not. One might say to that that using violence to succeed one self’s goals is immoral and selfish. I simply reply with this: “I don’t care.” How is one supposed to know if they are going to get stabbed in the back by another? Exactly you do not. It is every man for himself out there in this world.
The greatest factor that probably decides whether a group is a cult or a religious organization is criminal behavior such as murder, rape, abduction, and weapons stockpiling. Other characteristics that differentiate a cult from a religious organization are that cults will retaliate against those who have
“Hostility breeds violence, and violence breeds fear” (Hallian, 2005, p.10) When prisons take away basic human rights, they begin to see chaos and violence and where in that is it making prisoners better or rehabilitated. Society looks at prisoners as these people who are not worthy of rights in any form, they have committed crimes against society and in that should be punished accordingly. Prisoners are punished accordingly once they become incarcerated, but that does not mean that they should be stripped of the rights, regardless of the crime they committed. Each individual is a human being and in that deserves to be protected under the Constitution. The Government is the only entity that can change what is happening in our prisons today.
